…The collection, nonetheless, is of real value, both as historical record, and as a picture of Zürich that will upset preconceptions of Swiss provincialism and social harmony. These are images of young people stubbornly asserting their right to self-expression, to an identity outside of the prescribed norms of adult society. The spontaneous, and unbounded nature of this self-expression is perfectly captured in the book’s closing images, of young people skinny-dipping in the river after a protest in August 1980. After such a moment of joyous liberation, no city, surely, could ever be quite the same again?…
